Rays of Hope

Sanajit Sardar, a 25 year old youth, rescued by Kalighat Police on 2020 from Rashbihari Avenue and was placed in Kalight shelter. He was rescued with his wife and a child. The past history reveals that he was jobless during lockdown due to Covid-19 Pandemic and was forced to sleep in the roadside. They do not have anything to eat. He became drug addicted and after losing all hope he was in anger and loose of all enthusiasm.

Few days later at shelter he was counseled two to three times and then he opened himself. Bid by bid he gained confidence and tried to control his addiction. After the lockdown he got a job in Metro Railway as daily labor. He still continues to live in the shelter and take part in various activities.

Tara Naskar, another name of continuous endeavor

Tara Naskar, a 23 year old woman living at Lakshmikantapur with her husband and three children. Elder son Gopal is eight years, younger son Raja is three years and the daughter is five years old. When she was 15 years she got married. After some years her husband and her mother in law started torturing both physically and mentally. The torture was of various kinds and it flurried at unbearable level. Her husband is a daily labour. Finding no other options Tara moves to Kolkata one day. She was staying at Rashbehari, Kolkata and was living in the footpath with her three children. Tara became homeless.

She started begging to feed her children. Kolkata police rescued her and shifted to the Shelter for Urban Homeless-Kalighat, run by Aastha Jadabpur on February, 2020. She was hopeless and helpless at that time. At that time of need Aastha Jadabpur and the staffs stood beside her. She has been providing food by the shelter since then. The staffs of the said shelter counseled her continuously. After so many days of counseling she encouraged to do something better except begging. She took a job as a maid servant and stated earning Rs. 4000/- per month. She even admitted her children to school by the help of Aastha Jadabpur for their better future. Aastha Jadabpur helped her children in studies. Tara is living now a decent life as she is now empowered, confident and focused in her life.
